Q: On my top floor the waste stack has a hub with a 1 12 -inch fitting with no threads. 1 12 inch PVC slides in snug and tight. Can I glue it? -Jim T. A: You can’t glue PVC pipe directly to metal pipe of any type. PVC cement creates a solvent bond with plastic only, and doesn’t adhere to metal. If your code allows it, the pipe can be inserted into a rubber seal that fits inside the hub, then sealed in place with a sealant specifically made for this application. A retailer of plumbing parts should have all the pieces you need. Once again, you need to be sure that your plumbing codes allow this type of insertion seal. If not, you may need to cut off the hub portion of the old fitting and then use an approved band clamp to join the two pipes. Q: I smelled a moldy type smell in my 22 year old house. When I went underneath I found a number of areas not covered by plastic. That exposed earth did smell moldy, and appeared to have a crust of some sort on the dirt. I also noticed the plastic sheeting did not go up the walls at all. In a few areas dirt and tiny roots have seeped through. The ground was dryer than I worried it might be. Can I put additional plastic over the cu...

In Trump’s Japan Visit, Golf, Sumo Wrestling — And A Raft Of Policy Differences : NPR

President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo on Monday. Evan Vucci/AP hide caption The optics and the rhetoric of President Trump’s state visit to Japan aimed to show two allies at their closest in history, at the start of a new Japanese emperor’s reign. Trump is the first state guest to visit since Emperor Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1. On Sunday, he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shared a round of golf, attended a sumo wrestling match and had a barbecue dinner. But on Monday, a joint press conference with the two leaders revealed the two countries struggling to manage differences over a raft of policy issues — in particular, bilateral trade, North Korea and Iran. President Trump walks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe before playing a round of golf on Sunday in Shiba, Japan. One of Japan’s top concerns is that the U.S. is threatening tariffs on Japanese car exports to the U.S. if a deal is not reached in six months. Those exports are a mainst...

Bringing hybrid technology to light trucks isn’t a new or novel idea—a small increase in mpg

Bringing hybrid technology to light trucks isn’t a new or novel idea—a small increase in mpg is a large percentage when fuel economy is in the teens. General Motors previously offered hybrid Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. Chrysler, way back in the Daimler days, co-developed a longitudinal hybrid transmission that was all but stillborn in the form of the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen hybrids (the same transmission was used in BMW and GM SUVs). UPS even dabbled with the idea of a series hybrid using hydraulics. With the automotive industry (at the moment) still marching toward Obama-era fuel-economy targets, it should come as no surprise that Ram is doing all it can to make its trucks as efficient as possible. But unlike the giant banners on the doors of circa-2008 Chevy Tahoe hybrids, nothing on this truck proclaims that your testosterone-fueled purchase of a Ram 1500 pickup is secretly reducing America’s fuel consumption. Enter eTorque: Any 2019 Ram 1500—the all-new one, not the Ram Classic that is just a continuation of the previous generation—can be equipped with a motor/generator attached to its engine’s crankshaft via a belt that is capable of add...

A little over nine years ago, we put a story together that looked at how the off-road industry

A little over nine years ago, we put a story together that looked at how the off-road industry was beginning to seriously look at electric ATVs and UTVs. At the time, Polaris was the only major manufacturer with an electric model – the Ranger EV, though there were a few smaller companies with electric models. However, as of today, those smaller brands have all disappeared (let’s all pour one out for Barefoot Motors). But that doesn’t mean the age of the electric ATV and UTV is dead. As a refresher, we decided to try and find every current electric UTV available and put them all in one place and we will try to keep this article updated with new models as they are introduced. Before we look at current electric UTV models, here’s a little background on electric vehicles, their benefits and some drawbacks. Perhaps the biggest perk of electric vehicles is that they are almost completely silent. This is especially important for people that use their vehicles for traveling to and from hunting stands. Beyond the sound of the tires rolling on the ground and a faint hum from the electric motor, you will hear almost nothing when you press down on the go pedal. That quiet operation is also ...

Bunny Guinness: don’t buy new garden furniture  – repair and restore instead

Before we bought our house 30 years ago, a friend was also interested in it. She got an architect to check it over and he said all the windows needed replacing. Fortunately for us, she backed out of the sale. We have replaced just one window and the others are still doing a sterling job. The quality of timber used today seems to be vastly inferior to the slower grown, better cured timber of the past so if I have any problems with doors and windows I tend to repair rather than replace. The same goes for garden furniture. You can often find some amazing bargains on eBay, Preloved or at an auction. These might well need a bit of a touch-up, but you can end up with an unusual, personalised piece that you are unlikely to see elsewhere. Our old green oak garden table is 3m x 1m. We made it from chunky planks pre-cut by a saw mill for £200. It featured in a DIY book I wrote 17 years ago, Garden Workshop. Now the top is a bit eroded in places and the husband (who is more Rothschild than Steptoe) started making noises. I (being more Steptoe than Rothschild) decided to give it a lift. Having admired a zinc-topped dining table, I decided a new top might work. Philip, from Manor Welding, wh...

What you curb is Triangulador’s canvas — Tone Madison

Tone Madison is an independent website, podcast, email newsletter, and event series covering music and culture in Madison, Wisconsin. The Madison-based street artist reflects on confidence and making work from other people’s trash. (Header photo by Jess Haven.) If you frequent downtown or the near east side, you may have come to know the work of artist Liubóv Szwako, whether you realize it or not. The warmer months bring his expression to the forefront, in the most happenstance spots and unexpected moments of our daily hustle (or grind, whimsy, whatever), and Szwako creates a lot of his work on things everyone else discards. Perhaps you’ve noticed an old mattress given new life on its very temporary curb perch, soon after its owner decided it wasn’t worth hauling to the next dwelling across town (or beyond), or maybe a freshly cohabitating couple deemed it the loser in a duel of “whose-mattress-should-we-keep.” Szwako covers such castoffs in bright colors and quick, sharp geometric shapes or thick, bold, infinite loop-and-swerve line stories punctuated with unapologetic dots and fanciful lashes. Or, in your Instagram feed, maybe you caught a glimps...

A reign mark records the name of the Chinese dynasty and the reign of the emperor

A reign mark records the name of the Chinese dynasty and the reign of the emperor during which the piece was made. It comprises four or six Chinese characters, and is usually found on the base of a work of art commissioned for the Emperor or his imperial household. Reign marks are most commonly written in vertical columns and are read from top to bottom, and from right to left. It is thought that this system of reading and writing grew from ancient Chinese traditions of writing on vertical strips of bamboo or bone. Reign marks can also be written in a horizontal line that is read from right to left. Reign marks follow a set format, and a six-character mark can be broken down as follows: the first two characters refer to the dynasty, and are either Da Ming meaning ‘Great Ming’ dynasty (1368-1644), or Da Qing, translated as ‘Great Qing’ dynasty (1644-1911); the second two characters refer to the name of the Emperor; and the last two characters, Nian Zhi, mean ‘made for’. Four-character reign marks simply omit the first two characters recording the name of the dynasty. For example, the two six-character reign marks illustrated above read: Da Ming Jiajing Nian Zhi, ‘Made in the Gre...

7 Things You Should Never Store In Your Garden Shed

Insulation, mould and humidity control in a garden shed means that there are certain household items you should avoid storing inside them. Whether it’s paint, glue, canned food or clothing, it’s important you know what should be kept off your shed’s shelves to avoid them getting damaged. “There are two factors you should consider before storing something in your garden shed – temperature and moisture. Extreme temperature can damage a variety of items, and mould and mildew can render a lot of products useless quite quickly,” explains a spokesperson for BillyOh.com. “It’s also worth noting that there are some products that can be stored if you choose to add shed insulation, humidity control, and apparatus to regulate temperature. But if your own shed is little more than a wooden box at the end of the garden, it’s best to leave out these seven items.” The shed specialists from outdoor building retailer BillyOh.com have listed the items best not to keep in your shed. 1. Canned foodTry to avoid storing tins and cans in your shed. Any food container containing metal can be subject to rust, often causing holes and the food to spoil and spill ou...

How To Make The Most Of Your Memorial Day Weekend Gardening

Memorial Day Weekend is here. But the gardeners among us are casting an anxious look at the sky, or at least at the weather forecast, in hopes that it will be a good weekend to get gardens going and yardwork done. While typical gardening and planting is a bit delayed this year, garden contributor Melinda Myers offers some suggestions about what you might want to take on during one of the busiest and maybe most important gardening weekends of the year: 1. Install floating row covers: Cold weather stresses plants and delays your harvest, but Myers says even with decent weather she will give a little extra protection to her plants to speed up the harvest. “[Floating row covers] trap the heat, so if we have cold nights like we’ve been having in the 40s, it won’t kill your plants.” The covers let air, light and water through – but just remember to remove it when plants need to be pollinated or grow too big. 2. Gradually introduce plants from a greenhouse to the outdoor environment: The first day, put plants in an hour of direct sun, and increase the time each following day. Let the soil go slightly dryer and don’t fertilize until you transplant yo...
