Photography: Delfino Sisto Legnani and Marco Cappelletti Designed by OMA, the Dutch practice led by Rem Koolhaas, Lafayette Anticipations opened 12 March in Paris. Photography: Delfino Sisto Legnani and Marco Cappelletti Architects often talk about flexible buildings, interiors that can easily adapt to different needs, ready to accommodate several functions. But you’d be hard pressed to find one that took the meaning of this as literally as Rem Koolhaas’ practice OMA did in its most recent project in Paris, Lafayette Anticipations, its first finished building in the French capital. Faced with a 19th-century industrial structure on a relatively modest site in the Marais, and a brief from Fondation d’Entreprise Galeries Lafayette to create an art centre fit to host three to four annual shows, plus performances and workshops, the architects approached the design with a truly open mind. The result, Lafayette Anticipations, is a ‘curatorial machine’ of a building, with an adaptable interior that gives spatial  exibility a new meaning. ‘Paris is replete with prestigious collectio...

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is in the spotlight after the company debuted its electric pickup truck last night

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is in the spotlight after the company debuted its electric pickup truck last night in L.A. Citi is out of the gate early with analysis on the impact of Tesla’s new pickup truck. Analyst Itay Michaeli says the firm’s data suggests Ford (NYSE:F) has more headline risk than General Motors (NYSE:GM) from the buildup to the truck launch and eventual market share loss. Michaeli also notes that Ford generates more truck profit from the +$60K price level where Tesla’s likely truck line will be focused as well. If Ford has a hedge in the EV truck game, it’s through its investment in Rivian. The EV truck startup aims to have its own model for sale by the end of next year. Wedbush’s Dan Ives thinks the Cybertruck design was eye popping, but voices concern on the market size. “From a demand perspective this will be a more niche market, as we believe hitting the 150k/175k unit threshold in its first full year of deliveries (likely 2022) is the line in the sand out of the gates and could be a tough bogey to hit. For comparison, the leader in the market Ford sells roughly 1 million F-150 pickups per year. In a nutshell, we believe this n...

NFC Brings Music Mixing to DropMix Board Game – 2018-01-12 – Page 1

Toy and board game company Hasbro and Harmonix Music Systems released a Near Field Communication (NFC) RFID-enabled board game DropMix last year, and are now considering other technology-enhanced games like it. DropMix serves as a cross between video or digital gaming and card or board games of days gone by. Harmonix makes such music-based gaming systems as Rock Band. The company began working with Hasbro in late 2016 to develop an alternative to video games that employs old-fashioned board play, with its relatively more sociable and active form of engagement. Paragon-ID provides the cards, which it manufactures, prints and encodes at high speeds, according to game requirements. It’s a market first, according to Alexander Rensink, NXP’s business-segment manager: a game that employs NFC, Bluetooth, apps and traditional physical playing cards and board. Hasbro has been seeking games that can serve as a bridge to the digital world, while still using the traditional props of a board game—cards and an actual game board. The company has been working with Harmonix Music Systems to create a solution. “We’ve used camera tech for other projects, like Dance Central...

Are Liposome-Encapsulated Vitamin C And/Or The Levy Multi-C Protocol More Effective Than Intravenous Vitamin C?

As promised, we are continuing our chat with Dr. Tom Levy about the effectiveness of liposomal vitamin C (liposome-encapsulated vitamin C) compared to intravenous vitamin C and other forms of vitamin C supplements. Last month we discussed that additional health benefits can be achieved with high-dose vitamin C. However, the goal is not simply high blood levels of vitamin C, as is readily achieved with intravenous vitamin C. Instead, the goal is to deliver sufficient amounts of vitamin C into the cells and their interior components. As Dr. Levy pointed out, liposome-encapsulated vitamin C, even though taken orally, is more efficient at getting into the cells where it can do its work. As a result, oral liposome-encapsulated vitamin C appears to have comparable clinical effects to much larger doses of vitamin C given directly intravenously. Basically, the liposome permits a deep intracellular delivery of its contents via three mechanisms. When dealing with payloads comprised of nutrients like vitamin C, liposome-encapsulated delivery offers advantages that are not even offered by intravenous delivery, long considered the “gold standard” for nutrient and supplement bioavailability. ...

PORTLAND, Ore. — Steve Fick first explored the Columbia River estuary as a kid, so he

PORTLAND, Ore. — Steve Fick first explored the Columbia River estuary as a kid, so he knows his way around the vast waterway where the river meets the sea. We left the snug harbor of Hammond, Oregon near Astoria and slowly motored the short distance downriver to an area just off Clatsop Beach. Fick had prepared five large crab pots or traps with varied baits – a strategy he often uses so to “see what the crabs prefer.” Sometimes he’ll use turkey legs, chicken wings, shad or salmon carcasses – even a can of tuna for crab bait. “Oh yes, a can of tuna fish is perfect bait,” exclaimed Fick. “All you do is perforate the can so that the scent comes out – you can also buy canned sardines or mackerel too – both work well. As long as they have a high oil content, it seems to fish well – the scent is what draws the crab into the pot.” Each Oregon crabber must carry an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Shellfish License. Each crabber is allowed to use up to three crab pots. We timed our trip to fish our traps during the last hour of the incoming tide and then through the high slack tide period. (That’s often the best crabbing time.) Steve said it’s the safest time to crab in the...

Ford Extends One Million Pound Middle Finger at Tesla

Elon Musk certainly hasn’t been kind towards Ford in the past, talking about how the Dearborn truck plant is like a morgue. It’s a bold move considering his cars are assembled outdoors in a tent, but that hasn’t stopped the Twitter man from tweeting. He even recently claimed the Tesla all-electric pickup truck will be as good as Ford’s truck but also be able to tow 300,000 pounds. Yes, that’s a totally ridiculous number and there’s no way the truck will tow that much in the real world, under the SAE J2807 standard. That’s assuming, of course, the Tesla pickup even exists. While Musk has long teased the truck, we’ve yet to actually see it in any physical capacity. It’s easy to say (or joke) your truck can tow 300,000 pounds when it doesn’t actually exist. Ford is also working on an all-electric pickup truck. Today the company released a video of that development process, including the vehicle towing rail cars weighing over 1 million pounds. Not only is that 700,000 pounds more than Tesla’s claim but, since it’s a real truck that really exists, we can actually see it do it.  Of course, this is a publicity stunt from Ford. In any normal world, we’d just share the video and move on...

Ed Lotterman: Understanding wars and other blips of human history | Ed Lotterman

There is a sweeping arc to human history, but it is punctuated by irregular blips marking events that sharply changed things for peoples and nations. These include natural disasters like volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, drought and floods. They may be pandemics or technological discoveries like the cultivation of rice, invention of the steam engine, vaccines, integrated circuits or genetic engineering. These events may have demographic and social or cultural effects and usually economic ones. Some are immediate, some take longer. Some are permanent, some passing. Some alter current income or production; others alter wealth or net assets. Take low-rainfall years like 1988 or excess rainfall ones like 2019. For both, farm output fell sharply. Farms produced less, and gross domestic product was lower than otherwise. Ag machinery sales fell. Farmers lost net worth. But the effect largely was on income and not on assets. Several dry years and bad crop practices caused the Dust Bowl, coinciding unfortunately with the Great Depression. It cut farm output, GDP and incomes. It changed farming practices, population densities and rural economies permanently. Large migrations from affect...

Duane Chapman speaks out about rumored romance with Moon Angell: ‘There will never be another Mrs. Dog’

Duane Chapman, better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, is speaking out about his rumored romance with Moon Angell. Earlier this week, it was reported that the Dog’s Most Wanted star was mending his broken heart after the death of his wife Beth in June with help from his longtime personal assistant. Chapman’s daughter, Lyssa, was not happy about it, slamming Angell for moving her clothes into the family home (and replacing Beth’s things) and claiming Angell dated her brother before her father. Chapman is now speaking out about Angell, saying his companion is making him feel less “sad” amid his heartbreak, though she will never replace Beth. “Moon has been a trustworthy and loyal friend to me for over 20 years,” Chapman told Radar Online of his longtime personal assistant. “She has been with my family through many ups and downs. All my children are grown and gone on their own, there’s no one left to help me.” So Angell is filling that void, he explained — but she’s not Beth’s replacement and nobody ever will be. “Moon is experienced. It’s just that,” he continued. “Who knows what my future holds, but right now I need her. There will never be a...
